![]() ![]() ![]() $29.99 is sort of steep IMO, but at least the application seems to be updated frequently. ![]() My minor gripe is with notification redundancies. If someone texts your iPhone from another iPhone, you get the following flashing on your Mac: a Phone Amego Notification Center notification, an iMessages.app Notification Center notification, and a Phone Amego call status HUD window alert (that annoyingly fades away too quickly). If you were to open iMessages on your Mac and reply, the iMessage notifications clear from the notification center, but the Phone Amego alerts remain. At least let me turn off SMS alerts entirely or the Phone Status HUD alert for SMS messages (or even better, let Phone Amego only show me alerts for SMS messages and not iMessages). Ultimately, I just need an application that only shows me the phone call and SMS alerts that I'm not already receiving on my MacBook. It just shows too many alerts right now because it won't let you customize alerts for SMS messages and Phone Calls as separate items (for instance, I may want to have the Phone Amego Call Status HUD 'on' for phone calls and 'off' for SMS messages, but currently it only allows you turn it 'off' for both). Furthermore, while the program may (arguably) provide a feature set that justifies the $29.99 price tag, the price is just far too steep for my limited needs.Sustainable Softworks has announced the availability of Phone Amego 1.1.13. Phone Amego makes using your phone easier when you are near your computer by providing on-screen caller ID, letting you click to dial a phone number from your Address Book or on your screen, and optionally dialing through Google Voice. This release offers several user interface improvements including minimizing an active call window to the Dock, an option to translate mnemonics (letters in phone numbers), and remotely dialing a landline phone attached to another computer running Phone Amego sharing. ![]()

![]() ![]() There are several bacterial diseases that plecostomus catfish are susceptible to, including dropsy and fin rot. To speed up the lifespan of the protozoan, increase water temperature by two degrees. Quarantine fish affected with ich in a separate tank and add one tablespoon of salt to every five gallons of water to kill the protozoan. This disease causes white spots on a fish’s body, and the affected fish will appear lethargic, lose its appetite, and rub its body against rough surfaces. Ich, or white spot disease, is a parasitic disease caused by a protozoan called Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. However, plecos are still susceptible to several common freshwater diseases if poor tank conditions or unsuitable water parameters exist. Plecostomus catfish help contribute to a disease-free tank by “cleaning” surfaces and eating leftover food and algae. A 100-gallon tank is ideal for most plecostomus catfish, as this size gives the fish plenty of room to move and grow.īecause of their large size, plecostomus catfish are better suited to experienced fishkeepers who have the space and money to raise a large fish breed. Plecos are larger than most aquarium fish and are used to having lots of space to explore. Your pleco’s tank should be at least 30 gallons and should be longer than it is wide. Plecos are also known to wound other fish like goldfish and discus fish by sucking their slime coats off of them. However, stress, competition over food and breeding, and unpleasant tank conditions cause the fish to show their aggressive and territorial sides by chasing and pushing one another around. Plecos are peaceful fish that can be housed in a community tank. ![]() Plecos also change color when they are hiding or sulking. When stressed, the plecostomus catfish’s color fades. Not only does video production allow students to communicate with a broad audience, but it also provides them with an easy means to become civically engaged citizens. By providing instructional approaches for developing student expression that go beyond the traditional multiparagraph essay (which typically is not read by anyone other than the classroom teacher), digital media has the potential to be a powerful approach to education. It’s a versatile tool, and many of the options are free to students and teachers.Īs a veteran teacher, I know that when students are engaged, they love learning. For example, I have used the Voki Presenter option to teach elementary-aged students how to spell word family sounds. There are many other ways to use Voki in the classroom for instance, I’ve had students comment on politics or create advertisements for a product they were trying to promote. The avatar does the talking for them through the text-to-speech option. Though I didn’t realize this tool’s power at first, students who are often uncomfortable talking in class or who are physically unable to talk get the opportunity to engage in classroom discussions. Voki is also excellent for formative assessment. ![]() Students can comment on a topic important to them or simply share what they’ve learned. Certainly, the avatar design is what draws students in, but one of the most powerful aspects of this tool is that it gives students a platform for expressing themselves. Voki is a speaking avatar program that allows users to choose an avatar, make it unique by adding clothes and finding hairstyles and accessories, and add a voice through three methods: microphone, telephone, or a text-to-speech device. Leveling the class participation playing fieldĪnother creation tool I stumbled upon in its infancy and that I now use frequently with my students is Voki. (Note: If you have a memory of September 11 that you would like to contribute to my Flipgrid or continue a conversation with one of the people who posted to this grid, I would love for you to share it here.) Flipgrid offered my students an opportunity to have a dialogue with others through the affordances of connected learning. I shared this Flipgrid with my students, who not only watched but were able to create their own video response to posts that resonated with them. The interviewees used Flipgrid as a video tool to respond to a prompt about their own memories of September 11. To do that, I created a Flipgrid, which started with friends and grew beyond people I knew. I wanted them to hear firsthand what others had experienced. This year, as my ninth graders stepped into my classroom, I knew they were my first group of students who had no memory of the events of September 11, 2001. Flipgrid is one of the tools that I have leveraged in my classroom in order to engage students in conversations with people with whom they might not normally communicate. Though our world is huge, we can help our students engage in conversations that go beyond a 140-character tweet or an abbreviated post on social media. As a result, I have learned different methods for including video tools in my practice without the added stress and expense of purchasing cameras, tripods, and editing software. Since 2014, I have attended the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy at the University of Rhode Island and have had the good fortune of spending a week learning about best practices for using digital tools in the classroom alongside other K–16 educators. With more freedom to use mobile devices in the classroom and increased Internet access, video creation and collaboration has expanded beyond the traditional broadcasting or English language arts class. As a result of Web 2.0, digital tools are seemingly ubiquitous. Using video production in the classroom is no longer the expensive, intimidating approach to student engagement that it was 20 years ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() Due to this feature, many other cultures, especially Ancient Italy, adopted them for the benefit of their own armies. Ancient Greek methods of making armor were found to be very effective defensively. Mostly, they were made of bronze which maintained the vision and agility of the soldier. The Ancient Greek soldiers, who were also known as the hoplites were well-known for their heavy armor which came with a distinguished design. It was one of the most important pieces of armor for the warriors of the Ancient Greeks. So it was quite natural that in such battle-enthusiastic states, special importance would be given to the armor and guards of the warriors. In some city-states, like Sparta, which was a military state, it was compulsory for all men to undergo rigorous training and join the army after they crossed the age of 20. ![]() This was also a common feature in almost all city-states. It was a natural expectation that surrounded the belief system of the Ancient Greeks. They persisted during the middle ages as the buckler and the last use of a shield in battle by westerners was the Scottish Highlander targe which was a small round shield. In Ancient Greece, it was mandatory for men to serve the army for at least a minimum period of 18-20 years. Whatever the reason, the shield came full circle by the end of the western Roman Empire and round shields became the norm again. It also needs to be considered that finances played a role in ancient battles as much as today and attempts to keep costs down were undertaken so some societies only had a greave on the left leg as that was the leg most likely to be forward. Something else to consider is that a common method of fighting was the spear held over the head and used in a downward stabbing motion, the legs wouldn't be in much danger in mass combat. How that influenced the famous Greek shield we can only speculate.Įlongated or oval shields did become very common during the iron age and the Greeks themselves adopted a type they called the thyreos which they possibly copied from the Romans. The bronze age saw the dominance of geometric art which was squares, lozenges, zigzags and also concentric circles. Smaller flatter round shields do appear in other parts of Europe during the bronze age and it could be something as simple as you can trace the outline of a shield with a simple compass made of a scribe attached to a piece of string. It can't be answered with any certainty as it likely had a cultural reason, the same way the earlier figure of 8 shields used by the Mycenaeans might seem an odd choice. The gladius' short reach, combined with the necessity to get up close and personal to use the shield as a primary weapon, means a larger shield (curved to fit around the body, works better. The gladius is strictly a thrusting weapon, so restriction of arm movements is no longer of significance. The opponent is mauled by the shield, it's top edge and boss in particular used to wear an opponent down until his guard drops and the gladius can be slipped under his ribs. ![]() The greater reach of the spear also keeps the opponent at bay, so less defensive coverage is necessary.įor Roman Legionnaires of the classic period, the shield is actually the primary weapon, the gladius (short sword) secondary. Because of the many different ways in which a spear was used by a hoplite in offence, in and out of formation, a lighter round shield was more suitable by providing less interference with the spear use. For a hoplite, the spear is the primary weapon and the shield only a secondary weapon, being primarily defensive. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are ready for the wild west hunting as a wild cowboy gun shooter, download Western Cowboy Gunfighter - Cowboy Shooting Game now. You should assume that you will receive the minimum commission on most of your sales, so it’s clearly something to keep in mind, but assets that generate more royalties obviously drive the average commission up. Video royalties are higher in general, but even images can generate commissions of a few dollars (or a few dozen dollars) per sale, depending on the license type and price paid by the customer.
